JELLICOE PLAQUE UNVEILED AT AVIEMORE RAILWAY STATION

AVCC Chairman John Grierson and secretary Al Dargie who welcomed Captain Smith RN to Aviemore. Captain Smith unveiled a plaque at Aviemore Railway Station to commemorate the ‘Jellicoe Express’. The Jellicoe Express ran the 717 miles from London to Thurso during both world wars, transferring Naval personnel to and from Scapa Flow and other bases up and down the country and was the only time that a through service operated in this country. The only stops on the Perth to Inverness section were Aviemore and Kingussie. AOP (Another Orkney Production), an Orkney based heritage group has been working on a project to commemorate the centenary of the Royal Naval train. A heritage trail is being created by putting a plaque at each of the stations the train stopped at.
